Home Truths

This Website Has Heritage Roots

Many years ago, a few days after I took up a new job as a communications professional, a senior colleague approached me with a strange request. Ram, his son, who was studying in Standard V, had to write an essay on the topic “Honesty is the best policy”. He knew, he said, I had written a well reviewed book (Corruption—Control of Maladministration). So, would I please write the essay for his son?I was initially shocked by the request which was, of course, politely turned down. When I later thought over this incident, I was truck by the irony of the situation of a parent trying to corrupt this child with the help of the author of Corruption.

The elusive playground at Bondel

People living north of Kadri Park up to the city limits at Gurpur river bridge don’t have playgrounds or parks. After much struggle by residents, a plot of over ten acres has been reserved for playground on the southern slope of a hillock within the Government quarters complex. It has been leveled under private initiative, mainly by Bondel-Padavinangady Hitharakshana Vedike. However, the clinching critical action involves creating a local committee to move the action forward.

But, the representations and concerned papers are lying with Deputy Commissioner of DK. The Vedike and residents of the area await action by the DC. Will he oblige now?

Injustice to ex-serviceman

Sir, my father Devananda Rao who now resides in Suratkal after retiring from Indian Air Force was declared eligible for six acres of government land in Chickmagalur district. He was allotted land in 1997 without his knowledge. By the time he came to know about the allocation, the land was encroached by a former president of local Gram Panchayat. My father wrote to CM, met the deputy commissioner without any success. Sir, how should he go about securing the land ? As he is an ex-service man, is legal avenue the only option ? Any answers? -Editor

Central Government Not Allotting Roads.

I am from Mangalore city staying at a place called Yekkur in our own house for past 15 years. The land in front of our house is owned by central government. Recently they built an apartment on that land and haven’t allocated road for us and the neighborhood. They have built a compound wall exactly next to our compound wall, and left a small opening next to the compound main gate through which we can move our 2 wheelers in and out. But the Compound main gate is always locked  and we can’t move our 4 wheelers out. We have tried calling mayor for last few months but no response form anyone. They say that we can’t take any action against central government. I have spoken to MCC officials regarding this matter but no one is ready to take any action regarding since its central government. We have around 6 to 7 houses in the neighborhood. Initially the gate was left open for us to move in out and out, but someone from the neibourhood misbehaved with the Principal who is in charge of that area, resulting in his locking the gate for the whole neighborhood. Me and some people personally went to the Principal and said sorry for whoever misbehaved with him, but he refused to open the gate. His point is the whole neighborhood should go to him with the mayor and a sign a agreement with him. Then he would give the key to houses who owns a 4 wheeler. This is being delayed for various reasons since past 2 months. Currently when in a emergency we go to thePrincipal and ask for the key and move our 4 wheelers out and in and return back the key to him. Can anyone help me out guiding what i need to do on this issue resulting in a permanent solution?

Residents of this road face so much of problems taking out their vehicles on this road . Even though there is a police post next to Bennys clinic , police do not take any action on this nuisance . I herewith request the authorities to take necessary action as early as possible.

Traffic Congestion in Guruvayanakere

With increasing population, number of commercial complexes and vehicles, Guruvayanakere now wears the look of a town. The traffic chaos was started after Mangalore-Kadur road was upgraded as National Highway 234, which passes through Guruvayanakere. As Karkala- Dharmasthala State Highway 37 joins the National Highway at this junction there is more traffic in the junction. However, the people in the area are finding it difficult to carry out the day to day activities with the narrow road and traffic congestion. The proposal on bypass in Guruvayanakere is being discussed for the last several years. It is now said that the Guruvayanakere-Punjalakatte bypass proposal might take some more time before materialising it. The Buntwal Belthangadi road remains in the same width for the past half a century, and in between an effort was made to completely wipe out pedestrian pathway and drainage to bit widen the road in Guruvayankere, due to which rain water gushes on the road, and pedestrians are taking a high risk of becoming victims of accidents from the speeding vehicles. Guruvayankere is the hub for 6 state highways that will lead to Karkala, Mudabidri, Puttur, Buntwal and towards Kadur/Chickmagalur etc. I wonder, having been declared as National Highway-73, why this stretch is neglected by the political head weights who often pass through this stretch and visibly see the worst condition of the road everywhere!. More importantly, our Chief Minister and opposition party leaders and many Ministers did visit Dharmastala through the same route recently and have had the firsthand experience on this road condition, but it is surprising why they overlook these matters is very much disheartening! The commuters and local citizens urge the Government to take this issue into concern and make the necessary action immediately.

lack of basic amenities

Sir We pay crores of rupees every day in the name of stamp duty and registration at the registrar office Mangalore. Why we are not provided access to a proper bathroom and washroom in the registrar building. Why we lack proper seating facilities for the people who come and wait there for hours together. Why the computers are, scanners, printers not updated .Why not install cctv camera to curb the corruptions at the registrar office. People pay stamp duty on the prescribed rate fixed by the authorities then why every one is forced to pay extra money to the registration process.

Kelarai Circle to Bondanthila Road

Nearly 15 years, have passed for residents of Kelarai, Neermarga Panchayat to enjoy good road facility, axcept for patch works excluding the part from Kelarai circle to St.Anne school which comes under the city corporation that as of now has lasted. The rest of the road up to Presidency School is in an ICU state since past many years even though the ZP has been giving it dialysis through patch works benefiting the contractor and local leaders. These patched roads do not last even 10 days. The locals, visitors along with children from many schools in the vicinity have a harrowing time negotiating ponds in the middle of the road and also escaping water splashes to clean their face as well as avoiding stones and rocks that shoot whenever a vehicle passes by. Many unreported incidents regarding getting injured have escaped notice of authorities. Neermarga Panchayat washes hands of this road claiming it comes under Zilla Panchayat even after collecting huge amount of taxes from residents, schools, industries adjoining this area. Recent patchwork in some areas on this road past 3 months has taken it back to the previous year, i.e. poor shoddy work of the contractor with no one to inspect and verify the works. This has been going on from past many years with no residents questioning this injustice. The Residents have no respite from the bad roads unless some action has to be taken from................
